An unidentified flying object (UFO), which apparently consisted of three bright lights, astounded residents from Booysens in Pretoria for two consecutive nights for several hours.

Engela van der Spuy, 67, who lived in Attie Street in Booysens, contacted Beeld after she watched the strange set of lights on Thursday night for the second consecutive night.

“I’m not saying it’s green little space men,” said Van der Spuy. “We just really want to know what it is.”

Van der Spuy for the first time saw the UFO on Wednesday night shortly after sunset in the western sky.

“I couldn’t make out the shape of the object because the three lights were too bright, but it almost had a heart shape because there were two lights on top, a blue light on the left and an emerald green light directly next to it, on the right side, with a big bright white light underneath it which shone straight down,” she said.

Heads I win, Tails you lose.

Give me your savings & I will place them in risky investments. When they fail its your loss but I’ve still had my pay & bonuses & lose nothing.

Give me your pension pot. Again I will risk your cash but pay myself huge wages & bonuses before I top up your pension pot.

You take out a business loan & pay me lots of interest. When the economy gets tight I will pull all those loans & sink your business. But at least my capital will be safe.

Take out an account & give me your earnings, I will invest that money & use it to underpin my business. Hit hard times or make a mistake & I will bill you huge amounts for computer generated letters.

If things really go pear shaped I will go to the government & get them to underpin my pay & bonuses with your taxes.

You may be wondering where all the posts have gone – Paul the octopus etc have all vanished. Yet again the hosting provider moved the site to a new server and something went wrong. This is now the second major problem with a move. Even the backups mysteriously vanished!

The long and the short of it is that everything is missing again and I am NOT going to try finding all the missing posts from the past two months. I am just carrying on from this point on.

Apparently this is the last move and I have put on some other fancy off-server backups in place to prevent this happening again!

So hopefully we can get back to the business of blogging….

FRUIT OF A POISONED TREE
A true story of murder and the miscarriage of justice

          By: Antony Altbeker

(To be released in all major bookshops and on Kalahari.net by 24 May 2010)

In June 2005, Fred van der Vyver, a young actuary and the son of a wealthy Eastern Cape farming family, was charged with murdering his girlfriend, Inge Lotz, allegedly bludgeoning her to death with a hammer as she lay on a couch in her lounge.

The case against Van der Vyver seemed overwhelming. His behaviour at the time of the murder appeared suspicious and incriminating, and a letter, penned by Inge on the morning of her death, suggested that the two had been fighting.

But it was forensic evidence that seemed to prove his guilt: his fingerprints were found at the scene, one of his shoes was matched to a blood stain on the bathroom floor, and traces of blood were found on an ornamental hammer that had been given to him by the victim’s parents.

And yet, in one of the most sensational and controversial murder trials in South African legal history, Van der Vyver’s lawyers sought to turn the tables on the police, accusing them of fabricating evidence and lying to the judge.

In Fruit of a Poisoned Tree, prize-winning author Antony Altbeker takes you into the heat of this epic courtroom battle. Altbeker’s eye-witness account of the trial presents the reader with all the evidence and testimony of the trial, while also placing it in the context of a society and a justice system that are
being stretched to breaking point.

It was the most sensational murder trial of the past two decades. For ten months during 2007, Fred van der Vyver stood trial, accused of using an ornamental hammer to bludgeon his girlfriend Inge Lotz to death.

When the trial began in February 2007, a guilty verdict seemed certain: the police had found his fingerprinst at the scene, the alleged murder weapon had been found in his car, and a blood stain on the bathroom floor had been matched to one of his shoes. Yet, after a high-profile trial, in which some of the world’s leading forensic investigators testified, and which cost his family more that R10 million, Van der Vyver was acquitted.

But the story is far from over. It has already attracted the attention of the world’s largest association of professional forensic investigators, the International Association for Identification (IAI). The outcome of the trial, however, was rejected by the family of Inge Lotz, who have only recently withdrawn a law suit against him. Van der Vyver, in turn, is suing the Minister of Police for nearly R50 million, alleging that all the evidence against him was fabricated by detectives.

Acclaimed author Antony Albeker sat through the entire trial and, in Fruit of a Poisoned Tree, he explores the extraordinary circumstances in which the justice system failed both Fred van der Vyver and Inge Lotz. Part courtroom drama, part investigative journalism, Altbeker enters the heart of the challenges confronting the judicial system in South Africa today.

Fruit of a Poisoned Tree is Antony Altbeker’s third book about crime and justice in South Africa. His first, The Dirty Work of Democracy, won the Recht Malan prize for non-fiction and was short-listed for the Sunday Times Alan Paton award. His second, A Country at War with Itself, is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative accounts of the reasons for South Africa’s crisis of violence and of what to do to rectify it.

Praise for Fruit of a Poisoned Tree:

“Fruit of a Poisoned Tree is an important contribution to understanding the textures and dynamics of
certain aspects of South African culture and specifically of the machinations of the criminal justice system.
Altbeker excels in his relentless and meticulous re-arguing of the Lotz murder case, obsessively picking
through evidence and testimonies, like a latterday Sherlock Holmes, and bringing into play not only an
astute judgment of facts and character, but also offering a compelling analysis of the degeneration
of the investigative prowess of law enforcers.

It is a chilling revelation of the rotten state of the administrative capacity and the professional bankruptcy
of policing in South Africa. This is obligatory reading for those interested in the current state of the nation.
It reads like a thriller and is utterly un-put-down-able. It leaves the reader with serious food for thought.
It almost convinces one that fiction has become redundant in this country.”

– Marlene van Niekerk, author of Triomf and Agaat

“It’s a legal thriller, a murder mystery, a social commentary, a bit of history and a travelogue of the
most sensational court case of the past decade. It is exhaustively researched, beautifully written,
totally mesmerising and absolutely riviting. My wife is reading it now
– I’ll have to fix my own dinner for the next few nights.”

- Deon Meyer, author of Blood Safari and Thirteen Hours

“South African literature has not seen true crime of this standard for a very long time.
Antony Altbeker has married an expert’s knowledge of the criminal justice system with a storyteller’s
flair for narrative and suspense. The result is a book that provides rare insight into the often
compromised nature of our courts, yet reads like a high-voltage thriller. If you thought you knew
something about the Inge Lotz murder trial, Altbeker has come, like a master decoder,
to disabuse you of that notion.”

- Kevin Bloom, journalist and author

“Altebeker’s narrative of the Inge Lotz murder trial is both shocking and riveting, and beautifully written.”

- Peter Harris, author of In a Different Time

Crime and murder has been rife in South Africa over the past decade or so, but it seems to me that murder is now reaching epidemic proportions. Other serious crime also seems to have escalted out of all proportion – take a look at the beating up of baby Marzaan Kruger.

These terrible things got so much worse when South Africa stopped using the death penalty.

Some Arguments for the Death Penalty

- Some argue that the death of a criminal gives closure to their victim’s (if they are still alive) and their families.

- The death penalty serves as a deterrent to criminals who may be considering committing a capital offence.

- One of the main principals of punishment and the judicial system is that the penalty fits the crime. If someone violently murders another individual or numerous people, then it makes sense for the punishment to be death.

- Some anti-death penalty campaigners describe examples of people on death row, or people have already been killed have then been proved innocent. Today, the accuracy of modern forensics and DNA testing makes it very unlikely for an innocent person to be put on death row. Furthering this point, it is argued that the number of innocent people that may be killed is equalised by the number of actual criminals that are set free.

- Putting people in prison, as opposed to executing them gives them a chance of parole (or the small chance of escape), meaning they can commit more crimes. Capital punishment means there is no chance of the criminal committing another crime.

Some Arguments Against the Death Penalty

- The financial cost of putting people to death, once you consider extra appeals, additional procedures etc, can often be more than the cost of putting a criminal in prison for life.

- The death penalty is “cruel and unusual”

- It is simply immoral and barbaric to allow people to be killed by the state even if they have committed violent crimes.

- The appeals and additional procedures required to deal with criminals that have been condemned to death fill up the legal system which could be put to better use.

- It can be viewed that, life in prison with little freedom and poor quality of life is a better punishment and deterrent to criminals than death row.

- There is always the possibility that innocent men and women are put to death without ever having committed a crime. There will always be failings in the judicial and conviction system.

The problem with not having a death penalty is that there is no real alternative punishment. Criminals received almost a slap on the wrist these days. In Durban a few years ago, a man murdered three old ladies in their home. He received eight years, which means he was probably out and walking the streets in less than four years. Is this justice?

I feel that in light of the massive increase in murder and violence, that we should be debating and considering the use of the death penalty again!

Brittany Mitchell, the KwaZulu-Natal teenager who was arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder after she tried to have the mother of her former boyfriend killed, will not face a trial, instead she will have to go to Anger Management classes, a life skills course and do 100 hours of community work.

Now it must be noted that the withdrawal, or diversion, of charges is used to prevent minors or adults with minor offences from going through court procedures and rather receive rehabilitative assistance.

So what exactly is classified as a “minor offence” these days if conspiracy to commit murder falls in that category?

This worrying court decision is quite rampant in the UK these days, where so many people have been pretty much “let off” without barely a slap on the wrist. The result of this in the UK has been a rise in crime, particularly amongst the youth. These young offenders have grown up knowing that nothing will be done to them, regardless of the crime committed.

We can already see this attitude amongst the youth of South Africa. Over the past ten years we have seen a massive rise in serious youth crime, including murder, rape and violence. It is court decisions such as this that can only fuel this “untouchable” belief amongst the youth and further fuel this out-of-control behaviour.

My personal feeling is that we need to bring back firm discipline to the schools and homes, as well as firm action by the courts. Kids need to know that there are boundaries and that when they cross them, there are severe consequences!

What does this silence mean?

Well it could be that the police are still waiting for the crime labs to process all the evidence. It is well known that these labs are notoriously slow in getting results, generally because they are so overworked and understaffed.

Another conclusion could be that the police are absolutely clueless about the identity of the killer. This doesn’t surprise me, as it seems as though the police only get speedy results if the killer hangs around waiting to get picked up (a la the E.T. killers).

What worries me is that the longer we go without answers, the greater chance there is that the police will just try to pin this on a suspect without much evidence to back it up.

It seems that the media is also strangely silent about this. Despite the later E.T. murder, one would think that they would at least mention this case in passing!

Nicolaas Pieter Johannes “Siener” van Rensburg (August 30, 1862 – March 11, 1926) was a Boer from the South African Republic -also known as the Transvaal Republic- and later a citizen of South Africa who is seen by some as a prophet of the Boere (or Afrikaners). Therefore his nickname soon became Siener, which is Afrikaans for “seer” or “soothsayer”. His seemingly accurate predictions of future events were typically wrapped in religious patriotism.

Visions

The nature of his visions invariably concerned the welfare of the Boere and Germany and were experienced by him as visual imagery to be interpreted afterwards. When the image of the Sisal plant occurred in his visions, he for instance interpreted this as a portend of an important meeting, assembly or parliament. He is believed by some to have made many accurate predictions of local events, including foretelling the death of Koos de la Rey, a general in the Second Boer War, and the political transition of South Africa after his own death. At times his visions also concerned international events, among which the start of World War I and the rise of Communism. He was unable to interpret some of his own visions. These, written down, are still open to interpretation, and believed by some to pertain to future events.

Early years

He was born in the district of Potchefstroom. He only received 20 days of formal school training and spent much of his youth as a cattle herder. At age 16 he participated in a government expedition against the rebellious tribal leader Mapog. He settled near Wolmaranstad in the then western ZAR, and married Anna Sophia Kruger in 1884.

Participation in wars

Nicolaas van Rensburg participated in the second Anglo-Boer War under General du Toit. When time allowed, he then revealed the visions to those around him. He returned to his farm before the end of the war. When the Union of South Africa came out in support of the Allied Powers in World War I, Nicolaas van Rensburg joined the rebels. The rebellion received a fatal blow even before it started, when the influential general Koos de la Rey was accidentally killed on September 15, 1914. The rebellion petered out and most rebels, van Rensburg included, were eventually captured and imprisoned for two years.

After his release Nicolaas van Rensburg returned to his farm. His daughter recorded his continuing visions up to his death at age 64. The van Rensburg family cemetery is located 11 km from Ottosdal, in the North West Province.

LIST OF PREDICTIONS

Prophecies from 1899 until his death in 1926:
* The outcome of the Boer War.
* The Great ‘Flu epidemic of 1918.
* England’s loss of all her colonies.
* Independence for Ireland.
* The atomic disaster at Chernobyl on April 26 1986.
* Lady Di’s death The divorce and tragic death of “a beautiful English Lady in a car accident who would be mourned by the whole world.”
* England will be struck by seven terrible plagues when World War 3 is at hand.
* Civil war in Bosnia.
* Dr HF Verwoerd, former Prime Minister, will die at the hand of a close friend.
* The release of Nelson Mandela by ex-President FW de Klerk.
* The Necklace Murders by blacks against blacks
* South Africa will be governed by a black government.
* Japan will be destroyed by earthquakes.
* Ethnical violence in Russia and Europe
* Racial violence will explode worldwide at the turn of the century and start World War III, in which Germany and America will fight side by side.
* Laser weapons?: It is a chilling experience to read about his predictions in 1920 of this coming Third and Final War at the beginning of the 21st century when the armies of the world will use what he called “terrible electrical rays that sow death and destruction from above and below, and soak the earth in blood”.

The old prophet described the events on the battlefields of the world in such detail as though he himself had been an eye-witness.

In 1918 Rensburg prophesied:

“I see there will be a time when the whole world will be ploughed under. This will be the beginning of the Third – and last – World War and everything will be in confusion. Then I saw a snake lying on the ploughed land. I could not see its head or tail. I then saw my daughter, Anna, seated and writing, and I realised when that time arrives, no one would be able to make head or tail of my visions. From then on I asked my daughter to write down all my visions so that everybody would understand when the time comes….”

Because of this decision his visions and prophecies have been preserved and have now become known throughout South Africa, and the following words are becoming part of the Afrikaner nation’s daily discussions: “‘Seer’ Van Rensburg said so….”

Seer Van Rensburg was visited frequently by prominent figures in South Africa, such as General JC Smuts, a former Prime Minister of South Africa, during his lifetime. In 1916 General Smuts, past Prime Minister of South Africa, as well as General J.B.M. Hertzog, gave witness before a Parliamentary Committee regarding the truth of this old Boer prophet’s visions.

However, the same Jan Smuts, not only prohibited distribution of the prophecies during World War 2, but when a friend of the Boer Prophet, Boy Mussmann, tried to publish them secretly, he was attacked by the police and the visions were confiscated.

Because of the controversial nature of his visions, the old Boer Prophet is today still the centre of many heated debates. Shortly after the 1992 Referendum in South Africa, a prophecy by Van Rensburg, that a future Afrikaner leader would one day hand over power to the blacks, caused a fist-fight in Parliament.

AIDS:

After a vision on December 1917 and March 1918, he said immorality will increase throughout the world; he saw how a disease broke out in Africa as a result and mainly blacks dying from it. It spreads throughout the world, but whites are relatively untouched by it. He saw an old little ‘kaffir’ dressed in women’s clothing sit in Europe and droppings roll off him to the West (he is totally infected with this disease and the Western nations will also be infected). This was the first vision the Seer had which predicted worldwide decadence, immorality and pornography, also referring to a horrendous sexually transmitted disease’ as result. At that time nobody knew of the existence of Aids.

Divorce and death of Princess Diana

According to Professor A.G. Raath of the University of the Orange Free State, the Boer prophet predicted Prince Charles’ and Princess Diana’s divorce in January 1919.
The Seer said “a divorce was hanging over the head of a very renowned British lady of ‘noble birth’ (Diana). And when she dies, we prepare for a big election..”.
Van Rensburg said “when he sees ripe wheat, it means an election is on the cards.” And this is exactly what happened! A few days after Princess Diana’s death on 29th August 1997, the first election shots were fired by the NP and ANC.
In three important visions in January 1916 & September 1920, he not only saw how Diana would be stripped of everything after her divorce, but that her sudden death would plunge the whole of England into mourning. He further said that there would be dirty tricks involved in her death, and that she would die in a car accident. The scandal, he said, which she brought over the Royal House was the reason she had to die. Among other things, there were rumours that Diana was expecting her Arab lover’s child and that she would marry him shortly.

South Africa

1960-1994, the South African government loses more and more grip on situations and circumstances because they ‘forgot’ their Lord and God that gave them the country in the first place.e.g.: daily opening prayer in parliament was abolished in 1972 for the sake of Muslims and Hindus.

1994 – Mr. van Rensburg correctly prophesied the release of Mr. Mandela, it’s political ties (communism) and the false and violent ‘peace’ that the man and it’s party ‘preaches’.

1994 until the death of Nelson Mandela: the era in which the Boerevolk (Afrikaners) lose their power in parliament, get persecuted, murdered and alienated from their origin/roots. note: South Africa has got with the ANC a 70% party; therefore it hardly can be called a democracy.

The death of Nelson Mandela to a new and more balanced government: right after the death of Nelson Mandela very big strikes and disobedience occur, and they followed by a local ( 3 of 7 provinces ) civil war for ground and power (eg: Zimbabwe type of actions). These actions are however short lived; the revolt is quenched in a border town called Prieska and the people causing the revolt then are scattered. Mr. van Rensburg has prophesied that weapons will be transported over a railway line to that town; that railway has been completed last year.

During the time of that new government the Lord will return and establish His Millennial reign on the Earth, but also very big trouble will be upon the earth, and as a result many European refugees will flee to South Africa.

The second coming of the Lord being a jubilee year it’ll cause the borders of South Africa to extent beyond Zimbabwe and Namibia. Striking details in his dreams and prophecies are known, and symbols reoccurring in his visions are consistent and can be with relative ease correctly interpreted.

The World (especially England, France and USA)

America and England will become bankrupt and full of debts.

England will be totally annihilated, even their ground will burn away as a Russian-led invasion will invade Europe through Turkey and use terrible weapons.

The invasion will be stopped in France by German-American forces. Mr. van Rensburg actually made a remark that Germany will receive new ‘ground-breaking’ technology from America that they (the Germans) will use to defeat the Russian invasion; the USA will be unable to respond in a timely manner because of a severe attack on their troops, ground and finances.

Mr. van Rensburg also indicated that the trouble for South Africa will be much shorter lived when compared to other countries also less troublesome, as the Lord will send His power and blessing causing South Africa to be a safe-haven for Christians from all over the world.
